I realized industry was dying when they were trying to sign me to Warner’s. I was like, “What are you so interested in me for? Oh, because you don’t know what the fuck you are doing! You wanted nothing to do with people like me for so long, but you don’t know how to sell records, and you don’t know how to tour – now you want touring artists so you can take a part of that revenue.” I signed a hell of a smart deal, so they couldn’t get me – I definitely came out the winner of that one; I hate that they lost millions of dollars, but that was all their fault. When majors started doing 360 deals, they tried to buy Paid Dues from me, and I was like, “You’re on life support – you’re finished.” The biggest rappers this year – Tyler, The Creator and Mac Miller – don’t have anything to do with major-label motherfuckers. I was on Warner’s with Wiz Khalifa, E-40, and Jay Rock: we all got signed at the same time, and then they let us all go – and with our records! I’m like, “How do you have me, Jay Rock, E-40, and Wiz and release us?” Once he got out from Warner’s, Wiz became the biggest rapper in the nation! Drake, Wiz, Tyler, Mac Miller – they’ve made it clear the industry is irrelevant now. Next to the average rapper selling 200,000 records on a major label, you look at their income versus my income and I think, “Why would I want to be him?

I fuckin love you man

If I could share something with young people seeking an artistic career it would be this: Be willing to go out of your comfort zone and explore new territory. Did I think that at age 71 I would be creating a “crowd-sourced” music video with digital cameras that capture images that can be blasted around the world in minutes? No. But shaking things up and getting out of your comfort zone is what is exciting about life and mark my words, it is what will keep you young.
